I disagree with Oprah - Is that heresy?

On Monday I recorded Oprah’s post-Oscar program and had the chance to watch it last night.  It was fun to see and listen to the winners now that the immediate rush and craziness of their achievement passed.  I was enjoying the show a lot – until the conclusion of Oprah’s interview with Academy Award Winner Melissa Leo.

At the end Oprah asked Leo what this award meant.  Leo asked "What do you think" and Oprah's answer was the "ulimate in approval and accomplishment."  It was her "I am worthy award".  Leo started to tear up and cry.  So did I.  (you can check out this final minute of the interview here).

Because that was the most HORRIBLE and THOUGHTLESS thing I’ve ever heard Oprah say.

What does an Oscar have to do with approval and self worth?  Even if we are talking solely about her body of work, Leo was worthy and accomplished LONG before her Oscar win.

I am certainly worthy with or without an award of any kind.

And Oprah, with all she has said and stood for over the years, should know better than to say something that false and, I believe, shallow.

I had the privilege and joy of doing the Millionaire Mind Intensive this past weekend and, as you might imagine, worth is a huge part of the seminar, both in terms of monetary worth and self worth.  Our trainer, Adam Markel, pointed out midway through the weekend that no one is stamped “Worthy” or “Unworthy” at birth. The truth is:

We are all worthy.  ALL  the time.

No awards are needed to tell us that.  No outside validation.  Because none of that will matter until we know the truth of it within ourselves.

I am worthy of everything in my life, all I dream of and all I intended to make happen.
All that I have and will accomplished is amazing.
You are worthy of everything in your life, all you dream of, and all you intended to make happen.
All that you have and will accomplish is amazing.
And you don’t need an Oscar, Oprah, or anything/anyone else external to tell you – because you have been worthy all along.

Shame on you Oprah.

  2. Considering that Oprah owes her start to people like Steven Spielberg and Phil Donahue (for stealing his talk show format), you are right. She should remember the amount of actresses that had more talent, experience, gumption than she had.

More than anything, her start is owed to being in the right place at the right time and having the right look for "The Color Purple".

There are perfectly rich idiots that have done nothing to earn their fortunes yet they are rich nonetheless.
